Active School Flag

Active School Flag

“If you want to be great, be active and participate”

This year the children in Bracken Educate Together aim to get the Active School Flag (ASF). All the children in the school will become more physically educated and they will be challenged to lead a more active lifestyle both in school and at home.  We would like to invite you to follow the children on their journey and we will keep you updated each month.

September

Our journey begins with Laya Healthcare’s ‘Super Trooper’ health homework programme. This programme provides the children with a guide and an explanation of different imaginative games that the children can play at home and help towards their 60 minutes of activity every day. The children also have the opportunity to read about the importance of wellness and nutrition when leading a healthy lifestyle.

Swimming

Swimming lessons for 5th class pupil’s also began in September. All the children from 5th class participated in a 12 week swimming programme in Aura swimming pool in Drogheda from September 21st – December 14th. The children made fantastic progress in their swimming ability over the course of the 12 weeks and they really enjoyed the experience.

Gaelic Football

Gaelic football training for boy’s and girl’s from 3rd-6th class began in September after school.  The school competed in the Cumann na mBunscoil competition in September and October. The growing enthusiasm for Gaelic football in the school allowed us to enter both a boys and girls senior team and also a boys junior team into separate competitions.

October

Rugby

During October and early November a certified rugby coach Conor Burke from Balbriggan Rugby Club came to our school every Wednesday to coach the 6th class children for 6 weeks.  The children then participated in a mini rugby blitz in Hyde Park in early December held by Conor and other coaches from Balbriggan Rugby club.

Athletics

The children in 6th class 3 also began training for the Dublin Marathon in early October. Each week the children went to Hyde Park with their teacher to develop their ability to run long distances. They initially started with 400m runs which then increased each week. The children completed the final mile of the Dublin Marathon in late October.

November

Active Flag Committee

In early November the Active Flag Committee was established to begin step one of the programme in ‘Raising Awareness’ about our aim to achieve the Active School Flag. The Active Flag Committee members include both teachers and children from different classes.

Active School Flag Committee

Teachers: Paul Kelleher, Ciara Walsh, Ciara Kennelly, John Treanor, John McCutcheon and Daniel Murphy.

Pupils:  Jacob 6th class, Sebastian 6th class, Laura King 6th class, Oluchi 6th class, Joshua 5th class, Taofiqat 5th class, Norman 4th class, Tyrese 3rd class, Taoheed 2nd class, Adeola 1st class.

As a means of ‘raising awareness’ the committee had a meeting to discuss the launch event for the programme. We decided on a ‘Monster Wake and Shake’ in the school hall on Friday the 11th of December. All the member of the committee used flyers and newsletters to advertise the event around the school and inform the parents.

Food Dudes

The Food Dudes programme was launched in the school on the 16th of November to promote the importance of nutrition when leading an active and healthy lifestyle. The junior classes had 16 consecutive tasting days of fruit and vegetables while the senior classes had 4 tasting days. Children began phase two of the programme in late November, early December and it is encouraging to see children throughout the school bringing their own fruit and vegetables to school in their food dudes lunchboxes everyday.

Soccer teams

The boys soccer team have started back training and will be playing 6 league matches in the coming weeks. Unfortunately they were beaten in the Cup by the very impressive Oliver Plunkets from Malahide. The boys also entered two teams into the indoor 5-a-side tournament in Abbotstown and competed very well on the day. This year was also the first time that the school had a girls soccer team. They were very unlucky to lose in the Cup to Esker ETNS, they played very well on the day.
