We are delighted to say that we have been awarded the Green Schools Water Flag.
Over the next two years we will be working towards our Travel Flag as part of the Green Schools Programme.
The pupils will be learning about the importance of sustainable means of travel.
These include walking, cycling, scooting, taking the bus/train, and car-pooling.
Over the next two years we aim to increase the number of our pupils and staff who walk, cycle, or scoot to school as well as using the bus or car-pooling.
To promote this, we will have a series of “Walk on Wednesday” (WOW) days this year.
Parents can walk with their children to school if they live nearby. If you normally drive your child to school, you can try the “park and stride” option. This means you can park in the public car park (across from the church) and allow your child to walk from there or walk to school with your children from there.
In addition to helping the environment, this has a number of other benefits.
It improves children’s physical fitness and concentration levels.
It provides an opportunity to socialise with other pupils and parents.
It also helps to foster a sense of community in our local area.
Our first WOW day takes place on Wednesday January 15th.
Please note: teachers will not be supervising the children as they walk
It is parents’ responsibility to ensure that children arrive at school safely.
Green Schools 2018/2019
Bracken ETNS has been involved with the An Taisce Green Schools Programme and we are very proud to have earned two separate Green Flags to date for our work in the following areas:
• Litter & Waste – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
• Energy – Conserving Energy
Our current theme is Water, which is the third theme of the Green Schools Programme. The Water Theme looks at developing awareness around water conservation and how to effectively manage this vital resource in our schools and at home.
Green Schools Committee
The Green Schools committee consists of 28 students from 1st – 6th class, 3 teachers and a SNA representative. Our committee meet regularly to discuss our Green Schools Targets, our Duties and to obtain information about Water Conservation which we can relay to our individual classes.

Bracken ETNS held our Day of Action for the Green Schools Water Flag on Wednesday 27th February. A wide range of activities was planned in each of the classrooms based on our water theme. These included conducting science experiments, taking part in team quizzes and debates, completing maths problems, engaging in art activities, playing games as Gaeilge and learning how to plant and water seeds in Aistear!
We also announced the winners and runners up in the Green Schools poster competition. Well done to everyone who took part! Keep an eye out around the school and around some of the local shops in Balbriggan town- who have kindly agreed to display some of our posters to raise awareness.
Our Day of Action was a great success and helped us learn even more about the importance of water conservation. Remember our Green Schools code:
“Be a Water Warrior: Conserve Water!”
Here are some pictures from Water Wednesday:
In order to raise awareness of water conservation in our school we participated in the Green Schools and Irish Water Poster competition. The theme of the competition was Water Conservation. We received many entries and there was tough competition. Here are the winners with their posters and prizes.
